I have been getting dozens of emails from folks asking me if Repticon / or the Shriners have done anything since the November Reptile Show concerning the health of the building that a lot of folks think make them sick.
Apparently, they have have chosen to shoot the messenger, instead of address the possible problems at the building.
They have told folks that the people who got sick all stayed at the Red Roof inn, although at least 5 different hotels were used.
They have suggested that I have some sort of vendetta against Repticon / Shriners because they told a kid who attended the November show who was caught stealing food from the food court to not return. Hey, he was stealing, he got caught. That is no reason for me to have a vendetta against them.
If I had a vendetta against them, they why did I purchase tickets to attend the Atlanta show ? If I had a vendetta against them, then why did I book a table to share with Dr. Bob for the upcoming show ?
I was looking forward to seeing friends at that show. But, Repticon and the Shriners have told me that I can not attend, LOL. So, I guess that answers the question. If someone speaks out, and brings up a large number of folks getting sick at the November show, and asks them to fix it, they respond by banning that person from the show, LOL.
So, for all of you have sent emails asking if they have addressed the possible problems with the building, there is your answer. So, If you plan to attend, watch your health. And post here if you happen to get sick at or after the show.
For those who do not know what this is about, here is the original thread where I brought up the possibility of folks getting sick at / or following that show, and my asking if the building should be checked for air quality.
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/forums/Experts/46263
And here is a reminder of just a few of the folks in the venomous section who got sick:
This is more than just a handful of people.
And, there are more out there who have just not posted yet, but developed the same problems at the show.
Note that everyone is mentioning Bronchitis, Respiratory problems, Sinus Problems, Sore Throat Problems.
Things like fever, stomach problems, Nausea, or Vomiting, that are usually associated with cold and flu, are not part of it.
All are LUNG Problems.
That is a Strong Indication that what ever the causative agent was, it was Airborne and breathed into the lungs. It is some sort of Biological Pathogen that caused the disease.
Joe Switalski
Bottom line is something needs to be done. As far back as 2006, people were getting sick right after the show. Myself and a friend got horribly sick driving back from the show in Nov. 2008. This year, I caught it mildly. But Derek and Adam are really sick. D told me that he hasn't moved all week. I don't want to hear about Red Roof Inn being the ... Read Moremain cause...as there's others who have stayed in other hotels and still got sick. I'll bet my left nut it's the temple. How could that piss the Shriners off? A simple test could have it all figured out.
Kristopher M. Boldizar
I had sinus infection type symptoms as well as some throat issues that caused me to lose my voice by the end of both days. No other symptoms...
Josh Dimpfl
Save for the sore throat and such, nothing too bad.
Bill Rosser
my wife and I developed some sinus problems on Saturday around noon (I remember joking to her that I hope I wasn't getting H1N1) or so. I was miserable for 2 days, but I cleared up by Monday and I believe she was fine on Sunday. I attribute it to allergies as ours have been really bad this year.
I have a friend that is sick as a dog. Still. He was there all day Saturday, but did not feel well enough to attend Sunday.
Paul R. Moody
John I have alot of discharge from my nasal, and had a sore throat on Monday, but not as bad today...tired feeling...
Trey Lemons
Started feeling bad late Saturday afternoon.Bad cough, head and chest congestion. Our table was on the non-venomous side but I spent most of my time in the venomous section. Finally starting to feel a little better.
Nicole Strauss
Got a sore throat,
Diamond Reptile Breeders
I have been sick since the show. Sore throat, Cough, Stuffy head and Chest..Yeah....Thought I was feeling better yesterday but today sucks too.
Oh well..Have to take the bad with the worst ya know.
Trey Lemons
Hey John, I have been sick as hell too.My head and chest are a snot factory. Ment to introduce myself at the show but with all the people there I just tried to stay out of everyones way.
Josh Dimpfl
I vote on mold spores. Paul and me noticed some lovely mold growing on the ceilings from water damage. Oh joy, in March there will be one vendor, the only one who isnt still sick!
Cindy Steinle
Someones columbia photos had some lovely shots of the moldy ceiling....
Trey Lemons
If I am not mistaken quite a few people got sick at a show there a couple of years ago. They also had to turn the AC on at that show and it had not been on in a while.
Paul R. Moody
An A/C evaporator coil can house bacterial spores such as mold, mildew, fungus, streptococcal (strep) bacteria. There are many different types of strep bacteria. Some cause more serious illness than others. It is commonly spread through hospitals and nursing homes through the A/C systems...
Paul R. Moody
I have had a sore throat...very tired...

Every year people end up sick. I caught it really bad last year after the Novemeber show as did a friend of mine. This year, I caught it mildly but Adam who was with us is really sick.
JMEXotics on November 11, 2009
yep got sick myself... just a minor cold though thankfully
pitbulllady on November 12, 2009
I did, actually, and wound up having to take a sick day on Monday due to severe asthma Sunday night. I really didn't make any connections to the show site, other than the fact that there were a lot of people there selling rodents, including the person at the same table with me. There were also rabbits across the ailse from me. I'm horribly allergic to rodents and rabbits, and sort of expected to have SOME sort of reaction, but I figured it would dissipate once I got home from the show. Instead, these respiratory issues got worse. I'm still wheezing a bit, and I always have sinus congestion pretty much year-round, but I didn't realize that others had experienced the same thing after attending this show.
mrtigger on November 12, 2009
I had an asthma attack and had to use albuterol to control it. My lungs were irritated for many hours.
pitbulllady on November 12, 2009
My symptoms weren't "flue-like" at all. I didn't have digestive issues or a fever; I just couldn't breathe without using my inhaler. My lungs are also still irritated and I've still got some wheezing and shortness of breath, though not bad enough to keep me home from work.
swampwoogie919 on November 12, 2009
Yep..started feeling bad saturday afternoon.
Adamanteus70 on November 12, 2009
I feel like crap. I woke up Monday morning with a sore throat and tired as all heck. The throat soreness went away, but I feel worn out and weak like the flu. My legs are sore and ache, and I have been sleeping a lot. No fever or anything, but that is just how I am, never really getting very sick, but just a bad period of feeling like crap.
I showed the mold on the ceiling vents to Josh. I hoped to not get sick, attending such a big gathering of people, as I have no health care at this time.
CChadwick on November 14, 2009
For what it's worth, I showed similar symptoms and I'm still sick but I think I'm over the worst of it (my head still feels like it's gonna pop though). I was there both days from opening to close, and walked around constantly, between venomous and non.... If I had to pick a spot I was in the most I'd have to say the non-venomous because two of my friends were vendors in the non-ven section. I know alteast one of them is sick as well....

Repticon, you have stated that you wish you had been notified that there is a problem with the Jamil Temple.
Consider yourself notified.
I think that I have provided enough evidence that there is a "Sick Building" problem, and now, will hopefully be taken seriously.
I have not contacted OSHA yet, and will leave the ball in your court to do what is right, and make sure that the building is safe before the next reptile show there in March.
I hope that you will notify the Shriners, and request that they fix the problems.
This should probably start with hiring air quality tests of the building, with and without the AC running, and providing proof that they have done so, and publishing the results of those tests.
This should also include a thorough inspection of the heating and AC systems of the building, and proof that such inspections have been performed, and problems repaired.
This also should include abatement of obvious mold growing on the ceilings, and repair of ceiling leaks that are probably causing the problem, and again proof that this has been done.
And, it should be requested that NEW Filters be installed in the heating and AC system before every reptile show, again, with proof that this is being done.
Those efforts would go a long way in convincing the vendors who support the show, that you are providing a venue that is safe for their health.
If, for some reason the Shriners do not take the problem seriously, then, perhaps it is time to look for a location in Columbia, or, in another town, that is better maintained.
Large numbers of folks do not become sick following Repticon shows in other locations. But, there is a history of that happening at the Jamil location.
You should know the appropriate people in the Shriners to contact to make sure the problem is fixed.
I, and many other vendors, will be looking forward to seeing proof that the needed repairs have been made.
Best Regards
John Z

Seems like making money and making up stories is all they are about Archie.
One does have to wonder, if that many folks in the venomous section got sick during / following that reptile show, just how many folks in the non-venomous section, what was 3 times larger also got sick ?
I am not on any non-venomous forums, so, was not able to ask that at the time.
Also, one has to wonder just how many of couple of thousand folks who attended the show as visitors also got sick ?
You would think that in 5 months they might have done something about the problem ?
Will be interesting to hear from the folks attending the upcoming show if there is still mold growing on the ceilings.
I am happy that I will not be breathing the air in that building, and sure hope that my friends who choose to attend do not get sick like so many folks did during / after the November show.
Best Regards

Please note that as of date NO ONE has contacted neither the Jamil Temple NOR Repticon about any concerns they have.
We have been assured that they clean the system including the coils and filters, twice a year.
If anyone would like to call the Temple here is the number 803-772-0732 ask for Mr. Hilton.

Just curious if the same complaints about respiratory problems have been made by folks who attend the other conventions such as the gun and knife shows, craft shows etc. that are held there? Not to sound negative but gathering lots of furry animals, various bedding substrates and reptiles that may carry various pathogens coming from all types of housing situations in the same area could result in a wide spread air born respiratory situation.

Archie, here is what Repticon sent to me:
"After our last show at the Temple, John, you made several phone calls that were potentially disruptive to the Temple's business, including calling promoters of other shows, without directly contacting the Temple or us to express your concerns. Based on your actions, the Temple management does not want you on their private property. We will be respectful of their request, and you are not permitted to attend."
Yes, I called the SC Health Department and told them a lot of folks got sick at that venue, and asked them if they could check the air quality. And they told me they can not check private buildings, and suggested that I contact OSHA. Instead, I asked Repticon to do something about the situation. Guess I should have contacted OSHA instead.
Perhaps if folks get sick after the upcoming show, they will get together and contact OSHA, and try to get something done on a Federal level. If nothing else, the folks owning the building should be responsible for the doctor bills of the folks who become sick. And, perhaps the news media of that city would be interested in hearing about the situation.
And, I emailed the fellow who had a Gun Show scheduled for the next week, and warned him that folks had become sick at the reptile show, and asked him to be aware of a potential dangerous situation for the patrons of his show, once the heating and air was turned on.
So, yes, I made 1 phone call, and sent out a couple of emails.
I think that Cathy's statement that my calls were "potentially disruptive to the Temple's business" says all we need to hear !
It is all about making money for Repticon and the Shriners. They don't seem to give a whit about potential dangers to the folks who visit shows in that building. "the Temple's business" LOL, what a joke !
That is fine with me. I did what I could to try to help warn my friends about many people getting sick after visiting that venue. And I feel good about trying to call attention to a problem, and warn my friends.
I asked Repticon to investigate the potential problem on this very forum. Now, you have their answer to that request.
Best Regards

Zack, you bring up a good point.
That is why I wanted to have the Health Department test the air in the building.
I never received any followup from the fellow with the gun show.
A reptile show is unique, in that there are heat lamps and many containers with water in them. And, because of the thermal requirements of the animals, the heat of a building might have to be run to higher levels during cold weather, and the the cooling might have to be run at higher levels during warm weather.
And, there are animal food and bedding products involved, as you stated.
That often requires that a heating / air system that has been dormant for a long time be turned on. That is likely to stir up what ever has settled in the duct work. Who knows what kind of mold spores, bacteria, virus, or, allergens are stirred up by that.
The section of that building where the venomous snakes are, is closest to the furnace, so, might get a heavy dose of what ever lurks in the duct work, when the system is first turned on. Perhaps that is way so many folks in the venomous section became ill.
I asked for the air quality and heating / AC system to be tested. That might have determined the exact causative agent. As far as I can tell, no test of the air quality have been conducted, and no inspection of the systems for potential problems have been conducted.
If air tests confirm that the animals or animal products are a cause of concern, that is something that could be dealt with. And, if air tests confirm that a heating / air system is a cause of concern, then something that could be dealt with also.
However, if no one conducts tests, then there is no way anyone will know for sure. It is not likely that a business concerned with only making money would go out of their way to test something that would potentially prove them to be at fault though.
If any of you attend that show, you might want to look over the ceilings to see if what several folks described as visible mold has been dealt with. Perhaps even take a photo of it. A unfixed roof leak can quickly cause something like that.
Best Regards
John Z

By the way, as far as I know, Danny and Cathy only work for Repticon. I know folks tend to think that they are Repticon, as they are the face you see at shows. In the past, they have seemed like nice and hard working folks.
Repticon seems to be owned by a:
Healy, William healybilly@yahoo.com... See More
129 Burrell Circle
Kissimee, Florida 34744
United States
4072302717 Fax --
I think he is the one who is always hovering around the money box by the front door as folks arrive, LOL.
I would hate to think that Cathy is getting a lot of flack, if she is only the messenger (kind of like I was only the messenger for all of the folks who got sick).
Perhaps she is only doing her job passing on messages ? Like I said, from what I have seen in the past, she has been nice. So, don't blame her or Danny for Repticon's actions, or the shriners not caring about folks, if she is only working for them, and has no power to change things herself.
Best Regards
John Z
