I do have something that is very important to say at this point as the thread winds down.Together We Stand Divided We Shall Fall.Age is a bad place to start biting each others asses. In this age of federal attack we should be mindful of legalities to stay afloat not personal differences. If someone has a rule let them have it If you do not like the rule tell him then be done.Guys I look up to most of you old farts (LIKE I AM YOUNG)tHAT WAS A SLICE AT YOU Randal and you John. Both of you have been mentors to me both of answered any questions I have ever asked both of you and there has been alot of them guess what there will be more. That said I know for a fact that both of you do the same thing for young people as well. Both of you are good guys most of the time and we all have bad days weeks or even years. We three know what started this I take alot of the blame as I was trying to find out the Texas law.Basicly you can have a venomous snake at 17 if you catch it under your hunting permit. You can buy venomous snakes at 18 that are non native.wE KNOW THE RULES LETS ALL KISS AND MAKE NICE HERE IS A BIG SMOOCH XOXOXO

Just another age angle coming down the pike, the new healthcare bill that passed (I DO NOT want to start a healthcare argument) has raised the age of dependent children to 26! Your kids can now sponge off your insurance till their 26 years old.(once it takes effect, if it does.) But I wonder if anything else will follow that age choice. Maybe other agencies will look at that as a good thing and change also? Auto ins, drivers license, venomous permits, R-rated movies, alcohol, coffin nails?(cigarettes) Just a thought, Take care, Marty

I just got back from vacation in Louisiana, looking at colleges for my daughters and doing some field herping. It's no secret that I don't feel that young people should own venomous reptiles. Not trying to rekindle this flame as the arguments on both sides were well stated but if I had to pick an age, it would be 21. I've mentored many young people over the years and while there are some very responsible young-ins who I suppose could take care of a venomous reptiles, they are in no position whatsoever to do it responsibly and I don't think any responsible parent would do that either. Here's why: having their venomous "pet" under the same roof with family members who may not feel comfortable is not responsible hot herp keeping, not having the maturity in simple brain development that has been proven scientifically indicates that young folks should reconsider until they are older, and the financial resources to keep them responsibly precludes most young people to keep these animals safely and responsibly. Exceptions? Of course, but overall, please, who on earth can say it's okay for a young boy or girl to keep a venomous reptile in their bedroom. Really? Sure, there are many 30 and 40 year olds who shouldn't keep them either but with all things being equal, there's no substitute for experience and the maturation of years and life experiences. If my daughters (who are in high school) asked me if they can keep a venomous reptile I would say "hell no"..and I work with them for a living. Randal's 21 rule is rock solid - as he said, it's the law. Anyway, not trying to stir the pot again but just wanted to share my point of view.

In Florida the law is eighteen, not twenty one. And I keep going back to the point that they come visit with you before you get a permit at any age. I like that. It is similar to a drivers license where you also have to demonstrate your ability with a little driving test. Doesn’t matter if you ace the written part, if you can’t keep the big thing out of the ditches, you will not be allowed to get the license. The eighteen year written requirement is the minimum allowed by law but only that- absolute minimum. There is other criterion that determines the final ruling and it can be based on the individual regardless of age. Just like the driving privilege. I think this is one example where they are considering personal responsibility and not ruling with too broad of a brush and setting an age like twenty one that would arbitrarily exclude those few who are quite capable at an earlier age.

Rob,
"Randal's 21 rule is rock solid - as he said, it's the law."
Rob, Learn to read the posts a bit slower.
It is not Texas Law.
It is the Live Oak folks rule where he holds his shows in San Antonio.
More enlightened Texas show promoters will probably follow the Texas Laws which require age 17 or 18.
Best Regards

It doesn't matter if it's Texas' law or not John.
I rent the facility, they can make any rules they want. I have to abide by the rules in order to rent the facility. What part of that statement can you not understand?
I don't get why your acting like a jackass over this?
I follow the rules that the facility states, and I happen to believe that folk's are more respondsible at the age of 21, than 17 or 18. Don't agree? Then that's your opinion. We can agree to disagree.
Best wishes,
Randal

I don't agree, for this very reason just because they are 21 does not make them more responsible than every 18 year old am i saying that because im 18 absolutely not, if they are 21 they are more than likely to be drinking alcohol or "intoxicated" when dealing with venomous, call me crazy but there is proof venomous bites are more likely to happen in males from early 20's to mid 20's... hmmmmmmmm i wonder why that is, Randal i respect your rules every bit, although it does not mean that i have to agree with them.

No one gives a flying fig about you and your silly shows Randal, or who you allow in them because of your supposed "regulations".
In typical fashion, Rob has made a comment that has nothing to do with the issue. Texas Law does NOT require folks to be 21 to keep venomous snakes.
Best Regards
