Doug what is the correct usage of crofab on a copperhead bite.I only received 4 vials and it seemed to work at first. Then the next mourning my finger formed a necrotizing hematoma at witch point it got worse .Then I got to slowly watch my fingers flesh melt away.I have always thought that there was not enough antivenom used would that be the case.I have herd that 10 to 20 vials would of been better. What do you think.TJ the majority of long term keepers have received a invenomation at some point from something even if from a scorpion.I do not think that is always a negative in there ability.I have read your posts and they seem to come from some real experience some where down the line.I do not how ever understand that every time you are asked to fill in your profile you attack.I wish you would tell me who all of these false profiles are.You make good posts then get angry .Not my business who you are but it would be nice to know who I am talking to sometimes.Oh and Doug I liked your post very much .I know you have been bit a time or two do you feel less than..LOL..

True, I have had my share of bites. Occupational hazard sadly.
My guess Archie is that what you experienced is "recurrence". The problem with CroFab is that is it a small molecule that does not spend a lot of time in the system. Many times it is cleared through the system before the venom is completely neutralized (deep tissue envenomation especially). This causes a recurrence of envenomation and can result in additional tissue damage. I had a similar experience to yours only with a C. atrox bite.

Hey, Archie. The reason why I get angry (well, not angry, just annoyed) is because quite a few of the people who get on me are people who have seen me post here for many years. I was, at one point, on Al's e-mail list of jokes he used to send out. He knows who I am. I'm not new here, I've probably got several thousand posts. Some good some bad. But, the one thing I've always been known for is safe and responsible keeping. I don't keep anymore because my license expired. The DEC knew I had animals, but wouldn't grandfather me in after not sending me my yearly renewal forms. I got rid of the very few animals I did have when they told me.
I know people get bit, but when is too many and how is someone's profile going to determine whether or not they are able to post or give safe info? There are quite a few fake profiles, I won't get into who, many know, because they know of the people outside of their profiles. Anyone can put anything down for their profiles, it doesn't mean squat when it comes down to the brass taxes. You know that as well as I do. I'm not the only one who removed their profile. Others who have been on here for a long time have done the same. I got sick of getting junk mail, spam, and Florida dealers sending me price lists or wanting me to buy a specific animal I was asking about. I wasn't asking where, I was asking about what. Never got any info from them, aside from, "I have that animal and I'm asking this much for it". I also had some animals for sale years ago. One of the dip$h!t$ that I had interaction with wanted me to send it UPS...someone that posted in here. Not the type of people I want reading my profile and finding a way to contact me. I keep a very low profile these days and I've been stabbed in the back enough from people I called friends at one point. People who once knew me as Tom, not tj or TJP. That was also a deciding factor for me, as well as the double standards certain people in here for their friends. Now, I'm simply two or three letters to them and they are nothing to me.
Yes, I do have experience keeping and handling hots. Yes, I have had close calls. Yes, I've handled very toxic animals in the wild and captivity. Yes, some animals make me nervous and some I won't touch or be in the same room with when they are out. I know my limitations and what I'm comfortable with....I'll take a wild asper over a southern horridus anyday. I'm not here to fight, I just want to be able to give some pertinent information to someone that that may need some help or guidance that I think I can assist with, whether they have a profile or not. If people want me to stop doing that, then I'll walk. It won't be the first forum I've stopped going to. It's only a matter of time until hots are banned completely and this forum is all but gone. Something I've been saying for the last ten years. Instead of doing anything about it, people sit back and let USARK, REXANO, SCARK do all the work for them, then bitch like a bunch of lazy, little babies when something doesn't go the way they expected it to.
But, as long as they're in here telling people like me (who have done something about it) to fill out my profile they're doing something about it, right? Not hardly. I'm not the problem, never have been. It's the false personas and double standards that are and always will be....
Sorry for the long winded response. I hope it clears things up a tad. Basically, in short, spam, double standards and people who I don't want to know anything about me are the reasons I took my profile down.
I'm not on a soapbox, there's just not enough trust or faith in the hot community for me anymore. But, that doesn't mean I won't help a young person or new keeper from not getting themselves killed by a venomous snake.

Occupational hazards being the operative word, Doug. The more you handle, the higher the risk...everyone knows that. Big difference between a zookeeper or extractor who NEEDS to handle every day and a dipsh!t who FEELS THE NEED to handle every day.

This is becoming very frustrating. You should all be ashamed for taking your personal arguments out in a forum when someone is asking a sincere question. It seems clear from your post that you've had experience acquiring licenses and understand the procedures involved. If anyone has any information on those processes I would love to hear it--but in the mean time, let's all try to be mature adults here.
Once again I just wanted to thank everyone whose given me a response and want to express that I have only the utmost respect for animals and their safety.

I am curious as to how the animals
would be treated untilizing your
"new extraction technique"..
If you are thinking about harming
or mistreating the animals to
"lower insurance costs",stop while
you're ahead.. You won't get much
support here..
First of all.. IF you pursue the
appropriate education, you may wind
up WORKING FOR a certified institution,
though, not necessarily doing what you
want to do..
As far as "making up" a certified
institution, solely for anti-vemon
production, no..
It will not happen in your lifetime..
That is the blunt and honest reality.
I won't re-iterate everybody else’s
points.
I wish you luck in your endeavor..
Take Care,

Trust me, I understand your frustration and do apologize. I forgot to do that in my previous post to get things back on topic.

Thank you for once again ignoring my post and posting something irrelevant. I don't care what you think is possible or not. Also, I would like to thank you for blatantly disregarding my last post where I made it clear I have no intention of harming animals. If this is an attempt to learn more about the techniques I will be using then quite frankly, f off. If anyone has any relevant information on legal regulations and the process of acquiring licenses and permits I would love to hear it. I'm not asking if you think it's a good idea, or if you think my goal is practical--All I want to know is what the legal barriers are in the antivenin business.
Thanks to anyone who posts something relevant,
Henry

True TJ.
I have a direct encounter with perhaps a little over a hundred venomous snakes daily. Not one of these gets handled unless I absolutely have to. I can safely say in 30 years of working these (and other) animals, I have never once been hit simply moving a snake for general husbandry. There is really no reason anyone should.
Smokey- You question is more of a pharmaceutical based question in that since antivenom is a drug it is not really a "snake" question but more of a "how to bring a new drug through clinical trials and to market". For that I would suggest going through some information focused more on the drug side of it.

Don't wear out your welcome, Henry..
I appologize if it is bad news, but..
You don't realize how ridiculous you sound.
It isn't your fault, but do your homework
before comming here to waste people's time..
I also suggest you watch how you come off to
people, if you plan on using this forum regularly..
Sit back and learn, unless you have something
to contribute.. If you don't like the information
you find here, then look elsewhere.. Simple..
Take Care,
