Can shrew venom seriously hurt a small dog or newborn human? How does it compare to snake venom? I read somewhere it was similar to lizard venom?

Zuzana,
Most published reports of shrew envenomations describe pain and swelling that can last for several days.
Shrews eat small animals like mice and frogs, and they eat insects. The venom is strong enough to immobilize those animals fairly quickly.
Although the venom is apparently potent, it is not likely that it would be fatal to a human infant or to a small puppy.
Best Regards

I have seen some sources compare it to cobra venom, others to rattlesnake venom, but of course, that's pretty broad and imprecise. I wonder if BGF has ever done any work with shrews?

Z, guys just having some fun. While leading one of my field biology labs at a study site, I found a shrew under one of my cover boards and picked it up to show my students. He nipped me pretty good and laughed...and w/in about 10 seconds felt some very intense pain. Nothing like smiling/laughing on the outside but inside screaming like a little kid. Pain lasted about 30-45 minutes and then subsided fairly quickly. I'm sure Bryan will provide some good info - must be something in the literature.

Z - the word "shrew" can also refer to an implacable, intractable, vile and vicious woman (i.e., a b****), as in Shakespeare's "The Milking of the Shrew" - er, I mean "The Taming of the Shrew."
