Billy, I can't speak for Rob, but I do know that he lives and has his "zoo" in the state of Illinois, where no venomous are allowed to be kept by any private individual for any reason whatsoever. None. Through a lot of hard work, education, and determination, he found and built his "zoo" so he can live his dream even under IL strict laws. (unlike me, I just moved from IL to another state!) He works close with IDNR because I'm sure they keep pretty good tabs on him, and he obviously has a good working relationship with them. That doesn't mean that he could in any way effect or influence laws, rules, regs, etc. There are many other folks that post on this site that are working or have worked at zoo's, wildlife centers etc., that HAVE in fact been and/or still are private keepers. Cro being one of them. Karl, another. That doesn't necessarily mean that they have "connections" to the politicians that write the laws. Their only "pull" may be that if enough of us "regular folks" write enough letters and emails to them,(politicians) that they may want some professional opinions at some point. Take care, Marty

These kind of conversations will always pop up. So lets look at it with both eyes open,as a comparison many zoos as well as private collectors represent good and bad ,both sides have alot to offer, and have taught each other many times over. It is true that many zoos as well as those hirerd by zoos have put them selves above private collectors ,and in alot of cases can and often will incourage or support action against the private sector, but in some cases they ask for it. Not that the zoos are more qualified,it is in many cases there mistakes are swept under the rug, before it is exposed. Both sides need to stop the fighting each other, and find some common ground, otherwise our uneducated law makers will do it for you.A cobra in a cage in your basement, college diploma or a zoo payroll does not mean your qualified, this is only done by common sense, care and respect for the animal. So lets get back to educational talk, and toss the egos out the window. Take care Chris

He's baaaaaaaaaaack!
For the record, I just wrote a lengthy article defending the privilege of responsible private ownership.
Bear in mind too, that my first week in New Mexico found me defending private ownership in front of the Game and Fish Commission who then reversed the complete ban on these animals and now anyone can have one as long as they apply for the permit (of which I also argued had to be reasonable and attainable).
And yes, here it comes... it is a privilege and it IS NOT constitutional right. Either/or, you would be hard pressed to find more than a small handful of zoo herp folks that are opposed to private ownership.
The fall of private keeping will be due to the infighting and lack of real commitment from folks just like Tommy. Individuals that would rather fight, annoy those are ARE capable of influencing legislation and generally acting like a complete nutcase that most people wouldn’t want crossing their front yard let alone owning a houseful of venomous snakes. Frankly, I am growing tired of the insults and uneducated accusations. There may come a day when most of us do in fact let you fend for yourself. I didn’t make the laws. I didn’t make some people ignorant. But I am getting weary of fighting both.
