I have an Eastern Coral snake, Wild Caught, and in great shape. His enclosure is a large 20 gallon tank with 4" of moss over Reptibark. He is active, drinks well, and has made some nice tunnels in the moss to stay secluded. My problem is that he will not eat. The humidity is around 70% and temps are steady around 78 degrees. I have rat snake feeders that I drop into the tank and leave for 48 hours. I then remove them since he is showing no interest. I also dropped in a Florida Anole and left it in for 72 hours. He showed no interest. What should I do? He is in a nice quiet environment and we do not disturb him. I would just like him to eat like all my other hots do without problems. Thanks for reading my question.

It's not going to eat! Sometimes they might take a ribbon but even then it's rare. I don't know why dealers even sell them. It's basically murder on this particular species. Honestly, you should let it go. Even if it eats through the Summer, it will shut down and starve to death through the Fall and Winter. Most that are kept in zooz are fed with a long tube and liquid.

I have over the years kept many Coral snakes and had good luck with them..I would estimate over 95% of the ones I have kept survived. Some of these I kept for over 10 years. I always lined the cages with oak leaves. And only offerd ringnecks, ground skinks and ground snakes.Only leave the feeder snake in the cage with the coral for no more than 15 minutes. Also you may want to put it in a smaller cage.If and when it starts feeding only feed it once every 7 days. Even though after about 3 days it will start forageing for food again dont give in. Good luck

They can be problematic feeders. I have one now that I've had about 3 years and eats everything I've given it, even F/T snakes and skinks. I've had others that wouldn't do that, some only took one species of snake, one would only eat 5 lined skinks, one ate goldfish. I recommend as large an enclosure as possible with at least 8 inches of substrate. Mine is in a 75 gal aquarium. I set it up like a terrarium with live plants, and a water feature on one end. The water feature keeps the substrate moister on that end and dry on the other end. If you know where the coral came from, it may be a good hint on what to try feeding it. "Florida" won't help, be more specific, different micro habitats can have different food sources. Try a large variety of food items. Sometimes you'll find one that just won't eat anything. Maybe John Z will chime in. (Cro) He has even bred them in captivity. Also, on this site, on the left is a link to "File Library" go there and click "care sheets" then click the "Eastern Coral Care Sheet PDF", some good info there. Good luck and take care, Marty

Thanks for the great tips. I have removed the feeder rat snake, and put an anole in the cage. I do not see the anole anywhere now. If I am really really lucky, it ate the anole and will be good with them from now on. I have kept a coral snake in the past and it ate anoles with no issues ever, so I was hoping that this one would also. I am not sure exactly which part of FL it came from, but I will find out. I also picked up a green anole and a skink to see if it prefers one or the other. Feeding day is Tuesday, so I will update on Wednesday. The Snake is healthy, drinking normally, and foraging around comfortably. I am absolutely convinced it is not stressed in any way. Hoping for the best. :-) Thanks again.

Hi Chris, it is full grown adult. 24" give or take. I have not measured or weighed it yet. I don't want to cause any stress to the animal until I have it feeding. :-)

I would keep this coral in a 5 gallon aquarium, I think you will have much better luck with it. Also if the snake is about 24 inches it is about average size, these snakes can get up to and over 40 inches. Anoles may work ,but I would lean towards the small ground skinks.

I have 2 male Eastern Corals that I bought at the Columbia 2006 show. They have taken 11 different kinds of prey, beleive it or not. One has taken nothing but F/T pink mice for almost 4 yrs. Maybe I have been lucky, or just did alot of research or both. John Zegel helped me tremendously. Funny, I had several well known herpers tell me they would be dead within 6 months. Not saying they can`t be problematic, but to say they won`t eat is a blanket statement. Never had them refuse 5-line skinks, but feed them P/K or F/T, those skinks can bite pretty hard. Check out my profile pic, a Coral eating a F/T baby Copperhead.
Best of luck,
Mike aka Vampire
