During this time Stevens set a Guinness World Record in 1986. He spent 107 days and nights in a glass cage with 36 of Africa’s deadliest snakes as a publicity stunt to stimulate public awareness about the plight of the African gorilla and to raise funds for their protection. On Day 96, Stevens was bitten by a cobra but refused to leave the cage and was treated on the spot. Very sick and on his last reserves of stamina, Stevens completed the 107 days, still an unbeaten world record.
found this little tid bit on his bio on the AP site heres the link to his bio http://animal.discovery.com/fansites/austinstevens/bio/bio.html

Wouldn't it have made more sense for him to spend the time in a room full of gorillas? (Plus then we wouldn't have to put up with him.) :)

Sideshow. Actually two Thai women and one Thai gentleman broke the record (like it needed to be broken) The thai gentleman died last year while kissing a cobra on the head.
AP did not check out their facts but listened to Austins promoters.

I read that he has photographed around the world and in many magazines, books, and articles. I still haven't seen a valid one yet.

I like Austin Stevens. Hes cool to me. If he wants to stay in a room full of venomous snakes, thats his business. I mean really, how does it effect yall with what he does. He is one of the best photographers in the world and thats what I want to do. He is kinda a role model for me.

A great snake catcher? I dont think that is entirely accurate. If you have seen the Costa Rican episode, he catches a B. Schelgelli that has obviously been eating rodents it's whole life. I have seen schlegs in the wild and they arent anywhere near that plump. Also to tap an Egyptian Cobra just to get the perfect camera shot and then get bit isnt to bright in my book. My favorite episode was when he was in E. Africa and caught a W. A. Gaboon in the stream!!
