Al,
You know it. I love the booze. LOL. But Listerine has a different alcohol. It has methanol not ethanol. Not the one you can drink. Alcohols are a natural chemical that can make you drunk(ethanol), make you sick(ispropyl), kill bacteria(methanol), and some types of alcohol that can kill you if you just ingest a little bit of it(Ispropyl, Methyl Ethyl Ketone which is extremely dangerous to ingest). All alcohols are very flamable. Some like Methyl Ethyl Ketone effect the nervous system and cause blindness and paralizes. Also other can be used as anesthetic like Halothane.

Hey Phillip, you need to come to the DT ward at the hospital. Oh YES, people do drink mouth wash, lysol, anything with a little ETOH when the craving calls. Alcoholics dont care, if its in it, they will drink it. I am going to try your listerine tx next time I have a run in with mites. Sounds pretty useful. Bryan

Yup... I'll even give it a try Philip. It's a good method that will not harm the snake and is cheap. Good one !! Phillip

In my experience, the best way to kill mites is to dessicate them with a fine powder. Sevin is good. It's non-toxic (and also works well for killing fleas on dogs). Mites (and ticks and fleas) have a waxy coating on their bodies and the powder dries them out and kills the.
Make sure your cage and the snake is dry.
If you want a sweet-smelling snake you can use non-medicated body powder.
Pay particular attention to the snake's eyes. Mites often lodge themselves between the eyeball and the socket.
Listerine and water also works very well, but powder is easier to use on a large snake. The powder also kills mites in the enclosure that are not on the snake.
