Sorry, my mistake... I have been under the impression that you have to be 18 to keep venomous.

I would like to say how really pleased I am with how civilized this post has remained (at least so far).
I was 16 when I was accepted into college and 17 when I finally went off to attend at VMI. At that time their entire biology department's sole aim was "pre-med" and there was no room for a herp lover to study anything that wasn't aimed at becoming a doctor.
My snakes went on display at a neighboring university (Washington & Lee University) where a friendly biology professor gave me the mentoring and hands on time that I so badly needed.
I agree with most of what has been said so far because we have avoided absolutes.
MOST teenagers are not ready for the responsibility of venomous keeping.
Sadly, MOST of the adult venomous keepers one meets at the various shows really aren't ready either.
It really is an individually determined issue.

Larry, you are absolutely right, research does use the terms "average" as there are always going to be exceptions to the rule. My point, like Karl's, is that most teenagers are not at a stage in their life where they should be keeping venomous herps; in fact, in many states, its illegal for minors to keep them and I am in FULL support of those types of laws.

I must agree with Karl on that, It is good to see a "lively" debate amongst various people with varying opinions.
Its even better when no-one takes offence, as all we are doing is airing our personnal opinions.
I see that your laws vary tremendously from state to state, This alone could cause some confusion, I.E. Petra's post a statement was made, was proven to be incorrect and Petra posted an appropriate reply, unlike in the past when someone has got there back up and gone a little overboard.
It does show that it is possible to come to your own personal conclusion without getting hassle for it,
overall I have enjoyed this thread, But there are still a lot more people (herpers) that are not talking or communicating in this way. I suppose I count myself lucky to be able to be a part of the site.
Thanks everyone, Kieron

Rob,
I understand and agree with what you are saying. My point was that the original poster had gone totally balistic on the guy while knowing a total of TWO pieces of information about him: that he was 19 and that he had been keeping some sort of hots since he was 10. Taken in that context the comment you made sounded like a statement of fact that no 19 year could possibly be ready. Maybe that's not what you meant, though it seemed like your words were carefully chosen when you mentioned that some people mature later but left out that some mature earlier...
To a couple of the other posters who mentioed experience,
I also agree that experience is much more of a factor than age (note I said age, not maturity) in deciding whether somone was ready for a taipan. If the sellers profile said they were 45 and had been keeping venomous for 6 months I would be MUCH more concerned.
To the OP,
In case I haven't mentioned it yet, I am not arguing that this particular individual IS ready, just that an aweful lot of assumtion went into getting so worked up about it.

Larry,
(Just as an off-topic spin)
"OP" as in "Smokin' OP's" which was not a bad album?
Jamming to some old Seger as I type,

Larry, no, you didn't misread my comments. I truly feel that NO 19 year old kid should keep a venomous herp. That's just my opinion and there are plenty of people that I highly respect that will disagree with me. You are absolutely right though in that maturity and many other factors are far more important than someone's actual age and I know plenty of inept older keepers who have no business keeping any hot. It is just my feeling that a 19 year old kid, for the most part, is not ready for a venomous snake. Judgemental? Yes, but I am coming from the angle from having worked with many 19 year olds throughout the years and knowing where they are typically at in their life stage. But, there are always exceptions so I understand if my comments come off as a bit hypocritical. This is a very difficult subject that has no absolutes even though this is what I am alluding to.

Rob,if a 19 year old is old enough to drive a car, own a handgun, and fight a war, all of witch will pose a greater risk to his or her health than venomous reptiles, then surely he/she is old enough to own a Tiapan. In typical, curator fashion, you’ve essentially said “It’s o.k. for me to do it, I’m a trained professional, but it’s far too dangerous for the rest of you! Especially you youngsters! When, then is the proper age for Tiapan ownership 21, 25, 35? Perhaps the age of the individual should be directly proportionate to the danger of the snake in question. Say… 18 for a Copperhead, 21 for a cottonmouth gradually rising to… let’s say 65 for a King cobra! Look, I agree that 19 years old does seem a bit young to be owning ANY venomous snake but like others have already stated, it should be taken into consideration on a case by case basis. After all, if I had to work with a Tiapan, I’d rather have the reflexes of a 19 year old rather than a 40 year old.

Rob how old were you when you first dove into the hot herp keeping? Todd G hit it right on the head. That IS the typical curator response. If the kid has kept venomous for a long time, if he has trained with large elapids, if he knows or keeps his own A.V than why cant he own an Oxyuranus? I mean if a dad wants to take little Johnny hunting and gives him a 12 gauge shotgun for his 13th birthday, isn't that irresponsible? Look at all the bites of the past years....it wasn't any of the following ages. 18, 19, 20, 20, 22, Accidents can and do happen. But to say a 19yr old should not keep a venomous reptile is a little far out. I am sure the percentage of dedicated keepers in the age range is very very very small. But I guess you know everything once your a curator....
