For photos, Google these. My picks would be:
Jeep® Rescue - this is my #1.
Jeep® Gladiator
Hummer - the original.
Land Rover Defender - a standard in the African bush.
Land Rover Discovery Kalahari
Toyota Land Cruiser (the older body styles, e.g. FJ40)
And if you could somehow make them all get 100mpg, they'd be the most perfect vehicles in the Universe. Okay, I'm through dreaming. Guess I'll stick with my Jeep Wrangler for now.

All I need is my little 30 mpg LEV Ford Escape to carry my equipment down the road. Beyond that, the ultimate 4x4 is actually a 2x2 - your legs. Hopefully you don't need a 4x4 for ROAD cruising (even if it's a bad road), and it's rather difficult to sneak up on a snake bouncing through the woods in a monster SUV.

We have a 4x4 Honda CRV which is awsome for herping. We used to use a POS Saturn sr2 which I would never reccomond for anyone but pretty much went on every backroad in Southeast Georiga.

I have a 2005 Ford Expedition that I absolutely love. This vehicle has taken me to many remote areas and have never had a problem getting through some very sticky situations. Aside from poor gas mileage (the trade off), its a great vehicle but I do agree that a sturdy pair of legs will get you to many far better herping spots....my SUV simply gets me to the point where I can then get off the beaten track.

SUV? 4x4? You'd better believe it. There are some deep sandy roads down in south Georgia that will leave you stranded. Just ask Chad Minter and Johnny Hester! I have a '99 Jeep Wrangler 4x4. After it's first trip to Apalachicola, and I nearly sank it up to the doors in a "mud puddle", I added a winch to the front bumper. That Jeep Rescue is the real deal though. Winches on both bumpers, GPS software built into the dash. Sweet.
How about I set up a photo album just for herpin' vehicles?

I would like to see a picture thread of nothing but herping vehicles, good idea Chris.
I used to run a 90 Toyota 4X4 with a 4" suspension lift, 33" boggers and a 5 speed manual... no better herping vehicle on earth. The only downside was it was a short cab so all the tools, etc... had to ride in the bed if anyone was with me. Seeing how light that truck was and with the ultra low gears and mud tires, I went places other herpers only dreamed of.

Depends on the terrain. My terrain here on the OBX is coastal plain, beaches, dunes & marsh. For that Chevy 2500 pickup or Suburban Rules. For more wide open dryer terrain the H1.
