I cant comment on bushmaster behavior. However, I do know they are reffered to as "Ox Killer" in some of their range which should give one an idea as top what a bite is capable of lol
Leigon, I got your email. I will reply shortly.

Bushmasters are some of the most unique snakes I have ever had the privelege to work with. Though fairly placid to work with most of the time (99%), dealing with a fully pissed of Lachesis is an experience that I wouldn't want on my worst enemy. Having an 8' bushy coming at you with the intent of doing severe harm to you will shoot every hair on your body straight up....they deserve the utmost in respect, caution, and superior handling skills. Their strikes are amazing and the punch they can pack is jaw dropping. They are ambush hunters (for the most part) and I always use extreme caution when feeding our's (L. stenophrys). They are such a rare sight in the wild that if I had to pick one herp on my all time "gotta see before I die" I'd have to pick a bushmaster.....that would be the creme de la creme of field sightings for me.

Thanks guys. I would imagine something that massive upset at you would be unnerving. I would also love to see one in the wild, but my 2 "in the flesh" on my list would be naja legionis and oxyuranus microlepidotus. There seem to be on the web varying opinions on the toxicity of Lachesis venom. What's the potency compared to say a russell's or fer-de-lance viper?

I think B.asper is more toxic. Though I won’t go as far as to say B.asper is more dangerous of an animal, I know they are not far off at all. Both are monstrous, have a HUGE amount of venom and probably the largest fangs of any snakes, aside from maybe Gaboons. I wouldn’t be surprised though if a Large Lachesis or B.asper was found to tie or surpass the record for fang length!
Ive have personally seen a 6ft B.asper female methodically come shooting out of a cage, the second it was open enough for her to fit, snapping wildly in the air. Just imagine a strike as fast as any Crotalus, with the range of a sub adult boa and almost the same overall speed as a D. polylepis. LOL
With all of that being said I would still rather tango with either of the 2 before mentioned Crotalids on a bad scale day then a large, pissed off Costal/Papuan Taipan. Ive had the joy or working with an adult female O.s.canni who went ape and nothing in all my years of snake keeping can compare to her speed, agility are ferocity. She was the badest of the bad. Only a very mad D.polylepis or Forest Cobra could compared Id imagine. After seeing Terry Philips little demenostration on the show which started this thread, I would much rather take a bite from either of the before mentioned Elapids then any member of Oxyuranus O.o
Anyway, I kind of went off topic. Sorry about that LOL
Later,
J

Thanks for the comments on my "bit part" with the O. microlepidotus... It was fun to do... Albeit a little nervewracking when the camera crew ask you to hold at certain angles, certain ways and for time frames longer than I would prefer...makes it good fun :)
As for the bites etc...I can't think of any I'd like one from :)
Best Regards,
Terry
