I could easily be wrong, but unlike viper bites I'm not aware of any abnormalities caused by mamba venom that would be detected in bloodwork that most hospitals are equipped for.
Archie, I understand your point about the cottonmouths. It's the same way here. If someone says he saw a cottonmouth, I assume by default that is a banded watersnake unless they can convince me without any hints that they can tell the difference.
But when someone that I know has treated many cottonmouth bites, says someone came in saying he was bitten by a fat black snake, shows most of the signs typically associated with a cottonmouth bite and seems to respond to crofab, I consider that reasonble proof it was a cottonmouth. Certainly that carries more weight than what I heard from some guy at a show 300 miles away...
There is certainly room for skepticism until/unless we find the snake.

Larry,
If you aren't aware of any lab work to confirm envenomation then why be so quick to dismiss the power of the human mind?
I relayed earlier my experience with a chest pain incident and shortly thereafter Dr. Fry added a response pertaining to psychosomatic resonses given the proper stimuli.
I, just like everyone else here, cannot rule out that a very unfortunate accident involving a non native venomous snake occurred, however I can attest to the power of the human mind first hand. My experience with this phenomenon along with Dr. Frys' response leads me to further believe the power of suggestion could indeed play a large part in the symptoms the gentleman experienced.

It is also true that shock and the brain can induce symptoms that are very real yet have no physical explanation. It is also true that if convinced that a medication will save you after symptoms will stop. That being said if you were not bit by a mamba and were in shock from thinking you were antivenom administration would cure you.If you were scratched by a plant or bit by a green snake you would also be cured.Responding to a medication is not a sign of the cause of a injury. If I am bit by a bullsnake and I think it is a rattler crofab will give me the miracle cure and fast.So it is very important to find the offending animal. The snake hysteria the meda has been feeding on is a real threat to venomous keepers across the us.The average joe thinks that the movie snakes on a plane and anaconda are real representations of these animals .There for these situations ,mamba bites man or python kills baby will in fact kill this hobby. You know it I know it we all know it.Every ass hole who lets his baby gator loose or pet python is a real threat as well.I love snake shows yet I hate what they now represent ,any fool with 25 buks can have a killer. When I was young we were not many now we are every where that is also a threat.Serious keepers are few and far apart, myself and others truely like me are not as common as people who have a snake to be cool.I do not now or will I ever consider a venomous snake a pet yet they are under that blanket.More than anything this scares me, a python is one thing but a mamba will stop us dead in our tracks forever no more snakes that happen to have venom for any of us.This is why I will not accept the mamba without the snake.

Southerncat, where'd you hear about the guy receiving 1 vial of A/V and leaving after an hour? If that's true, I can't possibly believe that this was a mamba bite.

The information I posted came from Andrew Wyatt. I also heard it from several others.
I did say that it had not been on the news.
I meant no disrespect to anyone.

Oh no, it wasn't disrespectful at all, but I was curious about the source. If we can get verification of that from the medical side, especially on the news, I'd be a happy lil herper. I don't believe for a second that there is a mamba to blame.

If the information came from Andrew Wyatt then it has to have some foundation in reality.
I simply cannot imagine someone in his position throwing out information like that because if it turned out to be false it would undermine all the effort he has invested in trying to save the industry.

After doing some reading there seems to be many types of bloodwork analysis as well as urinalysis that would/could indicate envenomation.
Some of these tests I recognized by name and have actually had them performed on myself so they were certainly within the capabilities of the hospital where the fellow was being treated.
