I personaly kept a huge, 4ft plus FL cotton years ago named Tiny. He was enormous and the fattest snake I had ever seen! (minus large boids of cource). That would be my largest. Also, a good friend of mine had a pic of him tailing a monster FL cotton he found on the side of a highway. From the pic and his account, the thing had to be a 6 footer.
these guys are certinaly able to obrtain larger sizes then I think most folks realize. Certinaly the largest of Agkistrodon.

$700 for a swamp stinker? Geeeeeeze, I wouldn't give 1/2 that for a 10 footer myself, but that's me.

This is defiantly a subject that has my interest. Big cottons are one of my favorites. I have owned two that were over 5 feet. One was a male from south FL. We called him tape worm. He was a 20 year plus captive. (http://chuckhurd.bravepages.com/tape1.JPG) The other was a 63 inch female that came from SC. I got her as a fresh collect from Keith Taylor. (http://chuckhurd.bravepages.com/chuck61cotton.jpg) However, the one I am most proud of is one that I collected myself locally. He was not quite 5 feet, but he was close. He taped out at 51 inches, however, that was a monster to come from this locality. Coming from as far north as he did, he probably only ate 8 months out of the year. He also came from a location where the eastern but up against the much smaller westerns. I had not seen one over 2,5 feet there before. I talked to some older guys from the area….they told me that they had never seen one come from there other 3 feet and they had been hunting this swamp for over 30 years. This was obviously and extraordinary specimen. (http://chuckhurd.bravepages.com/chuckgunther.jpg) After finding him, I got a 3 foot female from a friend. He collected her from the same swap. I breed them and I still have one female offspring from them.
The one that Robbie (from Glades) had was 64 inches. Very nice snake. However, I could not see paying $700 for a snake of that size cause it would most likely be very old and near the end of life. However, he sold it at full price within a couple hours of posting it, so we know that these supper cottons do have a high retail.
Jeremy, I would love to have a copy of that picture of you and tiny…could you post it or email it to me? Thank you!

Don't get me wrong Chuck, I too love cottonmouths. Just not $700.00 worth of love. Take care, Marty

When I was 15 I used to ride my bike up and down dirt roads "snake hunting", I was with a friend who came across a large Cottonmouth in a roadside ditch. It had just bitten a big 4' size amphiuma and the bite marks were almost three fingers wide. We caught the snake and brought it to his house. The snake measured when we stretched it out 61"...I necked it and he held the tail, and we marked his bedroom floor board and then measured it with a tape.
He kept the snake for a couple of days before he let it go. Of course, back then there was no permit with FWC...and it was a secret from his parents.

I am not sure what the record is but mine would be 4+ feet last I check (a year or more ago). Here are some photos. The middle ones are the oldest and the newer ones are closer to the end (feeding pics). Total time span of photos probably 5 (adult) years or more.
A wild 6 footer would be an impressive sight to see!!
Enjoy!

My family went to Greenleaf Lake last fall, and we saw one that was at least 5 feet.. Absolutley huge! All black, and super fat.
This is in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, so it was a leucostoma.

First let me say hello to everyone, its been a wile sense I posted.
As for my larges, 4 ˝ Ft. would probably be the record for wild Specimens, but I have seen one that was over 5 Ft. in a privet collection. It would be nice to one day look out across the swamp and see a GIANT LOG swimming towards me, and actually be able to catch it.
Dreams Do Come True LOL
